Academic Foundations
At Noir Swan, academic growth is built on strong foundations, intentional pacing, and individualized support. Our program balances structured instruction with creativity and curiosity, ensuring students develop both essential skills and a genuine love of learning.
We use The Good and the Beautiful as our core curriculum for language arts and math, chosen for its systematic skill progression, mastery-based approach, and emphasis on meaningful learning. Instruction is adapted within small groups to support each child’s pace, strengths, and areas for growth.
Curriculum Overview
Language Arts
Students develop strong literacy skills through a comprehensive approach that includes phonics, reading fluency, comprehension, spelling, handwriting, and writing development. Instruction focuses on helping students become confident readers, thoughtful writers, and effective communicators.
Mathematics
Math instruction builds a deep understanding of number sense, operations, problem-solving, and mathematical reasoning. Students learn to think logically, apply strategies to solve problems, and develop confidence in working with numbers.
Enrichment
Our enrichment experiences include art, creative projects, movement, and collaborative learning activities that support creativity, teamwork, and self-expression while complementing academic learning.
Instruction throughout the program is intentionally scaffolded, allowing students to steadily build skills, strengthen confidence, and remain appropriately challenged as they grow academically and personally.
Science & Nature
Students explore age-appropriate scientific and social concepts through reading, discussion, and engaging hands-on activities. Lessons are designed to spark curiosity, encourage observation, and help students make meaningful connections to the world around them.
Scope & Progression
At The Noir Swan Collective, learning is designed around mastery, not speed. Rather than rushing through large amounts of content, we focus on helping students fully understand and confidently apply what they learn. This steady approach allows each child to build strong academic foundations while developing independence and resilience.
Throughout the year, students work toward meaningful growth in several key areas:
-
Improved reading accuracy, fluency, and comprehension, allowing students to engage with texts more confidently and thoughtfully
-
Greater confidence and stamina in writing, helping students clearly express ideas and communicate effectively
-
Stronger number sense and deeper mathematical understanding, building the ability to think through problems rather than memorize steps
-
Independent problem-solving and task completion, encouraging students to take ownership of their learning
-
Thoughtful engagement with new ideas and challenges, fostering curiosity, persistence, and critical thinking
Student progress is reviewed regularly, allowing instruction and learning goals to be thoughtfully adjusted so each child continues moving forward with purpose, confidence, and measurable growth.
Assessment & Progress Monitoring
At The Noir Swan Collective, assessment is used as a tool to support learning—not simply measure it. Our approach focuses on understanding each student’s progress so instruction can be adjusted to meet their needs and support continued growth.
Student progress is monitored through multiple methods, including:
-
Ongoing formative assessments during instruction, allowing teachers to evaluate understanding in real time and adjust lessons accordingly
-
Work samples and academic portfolios that showcase student development, effort, and achievement throughout the year
-
Biannual academic assessments that help track measurable growth and identify areas for continued development
These tools give our educators meaningful insight into each student’s progress, allowing us to tailor instruction, strengthen developing skills, and provide families with clear, consistent updates about their child’s academic journey.
